As we were working on our July issue, I was driving past a front yard that had about a million potted plants in it. I took a picture and pitched a story to my team called “Yards that made us stop.” (We ended up calling it “Curb Appeal”—and no, my amateur photo did not make it into print.) I’ve had yards and gardening on the brain, especially as we ran a backyard entertaining story and Richard Louv’s Vitamin N excerpt (he’s the guy that coined the term “nature deficit disorder”).

Nurture your green thumbs and learn about low-water summer plants at Armstrong Garden Centers’ workshops. Here is the July 2016 schedule of classes, happening at all 32 California store locations:
Saturday, July 9 at 9:00 a.m. – Top 20 California-Friendly Plants
Plant experts will display and teach you about the many colorful, low-water plants for our climate.
Saturday, July 23 at 9:00 a.m. – Growing Cacti & Succulents
Low maintenance succulents and cacti love the heat and are water-wise. Both add wonderful color and texture to gardens. We will show you the basic care for these popular plants.
Each class will be instructed by a nursery professional who will offer timely gardening advice and hands-on demonstrations. Advance registration is not required to attend and classes are open to gardeners of all skill levels. Armstrong Garden Centers also offers free garden talks from its team of experts for local gardening clubs, homeowners associations and other community groups.
