Software developer and photographer Phillip Colla has been running at Torrey Pines for 30 years, and considers it one of his favorite places in all of San Diego. When photographing it, he prefers to shoot the early morning or late afternoon into sunset. “Often the light is great, but sometimes the coastal fog can shut things down.” Colla, a Carlsbad resident, took eight photographs in a sweep from left to right, and combined them on the computer to produce the final panoramic image (wider than you see here). He used a tripod, but says it’s not necessary. “This shot is a surprisingly simple photograph to take,” he insists, noting that even point-and-shoots can successfully capture the beauty of this place.
