Ever looked in the mirror just to find those fine lines showing and skin wrinkling? You’re not alone.
The firmness and elasticity you see in youthful skin are mainly due to one protein in our body – collagen.
Collagen is the most abundant protein in all mammals, including humans. It comprises a significant portion of our skin, bones, muscles, and ligaments. It is the building block of our skin that helps keep it firm and maintain elasticity.
But, with age, the collagen production in our body decreases, leading to sagging skin and problems like wrinkles and fine lines.
We’ve explored and tested over 50 products to find the perfect solution to sagging skin, and the answer might lie in collagen supplements. After scouring hundreds of options, we’ve narrowed down the 10 best collagen supplements for sagging skin that stand out for their efficacy.

Collagen is an important protein in our body so collagen supplements can target many areas. There are a few factors to consider for sagging skin when picking a collagen supplement for sagging skin.
Collagen supplements for skin issues should ideally contain Type I collagen. Type I collagen is the most abundant type of collagen in our body. Hydrolyzed Type I collagen is more beneficial because the body can easily absorb it.
There are many reasons to go for this type, such as providing structural support to the skin, helping replenish skin fibers for improved elasticity, and minimizing signs of aging.
There are three main sources of collagen – chicken, bovine, and marine. Marine collagen is rich in Type I collagen and is most beneficial for skin health. It has a smaller peptide size and thus can easily be absorbed by the body. On the other hand, bovine and chicken usually contain a mix of different types of collagen, which is good for joint health and supports the skin.
Also, when checking the ingredient list and sourcing collagen, look for indicators like organic, non-GMO, etc. Before purchasing the product, you should always check for certifications like NSF or others and look for third-party lab results.
Collagen supplements work best when complemented with other nutrients and vitamins that boost its healing process. For example, always check for skin-supporting ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamins C and E, biotin, omega-3 fatty acids, green tea extract, aloe vera, etc.
Ingredients like vitamin C and hyaluronic acid retain skin moisture and promote collagen synthesis for improved and protected skin.
The typical dosage for collagen supplements is 2.5 to 10 grams daily. But you should either check with a dermatologist or follow the dosage recommendation on the product label for it to be effective and safe.
Moreover, collagen supplements are available in many forms, like powders, capsules, liquids, and gummies. Choose the type that you’re most comfortable with. If you dislike mixing powders in drinks, opt for collagen gummies or capsules. Gummies and capsules are also much more convenient than liquids and powders.
It’s always best to go for reputed brands known for their quality products and effectiveness. Ideally, you should go for brands that have third-party testing measures in place and are transparent about their results. It will give you insights into how potent the product is, its purity, and its consumption safety.
Check customer reviews from marketplaces to better understand how the product has worked for previous customers.
There are at least 28 types of collagen, each of which plays a certain function in our bodies. The most common types of collagen include:
Type 1 collagen supplements are mostly derived from marine or fish and are high in amino acids, glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline. Fish collagen is considered particularly beneficial for its increased absorption rates due to the smaller size of fish collagen peptides.
Collagen supplements are so popular because of their potential benefits for the skin and its elasticity. Here are a few:
Collagen supplements usually contain collagen peptides or hydrolyzed collagen. The body can easily absorb smaller fragments of collagen compared to bigger collagen molecules. These fragments enhance the collagen production in the skin. As the collagen density increases, the skin is firm and provides it with structural integrity.
Moreover, collagen supplements with hyaluronic acid, unlike topical creams and serums, have enhanced the skin’s moisture content. Because collagen provides structural support to the skin, it improves firmness, leading to a more youthful and toned appearance.
Consuming collagen supplements, besides boosting collagen production, also enhances the formation of elastin in your skin. Elastin is a protein that gives the skin its stretch quality.
With more collagen and elastin in the skin, the skin’s elasticity improves, giving you a natural glow and evenness. The amino acids in collagen peptides (like glycine and proline) also enhance the skin’s ability to heal and repair itself.
Our skin loses collagen as we age, which is the main reason for sagging skin, fine lines, and wrinkles. Fibroblasts are cells within the dermis that help produce essential fibers and collagen for the skin. Collagen supplements have collagen peptides that stimulate these fibroblasts in our skin, boosting the production of collagen and elastin.
Due to this, there is a visible reduction in the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, and the skin heals itself to its lost structure.
Most collagen supplements contain hyaluronic acid, known for its moisture retention capabilities. So it enhances the skin’s hydration and makes it feel supple and soft.
Increased collagen levels also improve the skin’s barrier function, further preventing moisture loss. All these factors make the skin look plump and reduce the appearance of sagging skin or wrinkles.
The amino acids in collagen are essential for the repair and renewal of skin cells. So, collagen supplements can significantly improve how your skin feels by promoting the natural healing process of your skin, giving it even and fresh-looking skin.
Instead of only relying on collagen supplements to do all the work for you, it’s essential to incorporate these into a broader skincare and health routine.
Start by picking the right collagen supplement for sagging skin. Ideally, hydrolyzed or marine collagen works best for skin tightening. But this can take several weeks to show results. Eat a balanced diet rich in collagen-supporting nutrients like vitamin C and zinc to boost this process. These include berries, citrus fruits, green leafy vegetables, and nuts. Combine this with a good sleeping habit and sufficient water intake.
For topical practices, use sun protection every day, even when it’s cloudy. Making it a habit to exercise regularly can further promote circulation and healthier skin.
Collagen supplements generally have a good safety profile but can have potential side effects. However, these are typically mild and do not affect everyone.
The most common side effect is digestive discomfort like bloating, heartburn, and feeling of fullness. Others include dizziness, headache, diarrhea, insomnia, rashes and breakouts.
Moreover, some collagen supplements from marine sources can have high calcium levels, potentially leading to conditions like hypercalcemia. Moreover, if you’re allergic to any ingredient used in a supplement, it’s best to avoid it and pick a different one.
Although there are no official guidelines about the amount of collagen you should take, it essentially depends on the type of supplement you’re taking, the concentration and other additional ingredients in the collagen supplement.
A typical dosage that most supplements recommend is 2.5-10 grams of collagen daily. If you’re new to it, you can start with a lower dose and then increase it with time and tolerance. Reading the product label before taking any supplement is good practice.
The time collagen supplements take to show results depends on factors like health conditions, age, lifestyle, and specific skin concerns. However, users have noticed improvements for most supplements within 4 to 16 weeks.
Changes like skin hydration and smoothness may show faster than benefits like skin elasticity and firmness.
Yes, collagen supplements help in reducing wrinkles and fine lines. The collagen peptides in these supplements supply amino acids that are essential for collagen production in the body.
This boost in collagen levels, in turn, improves the skin’s structure from within and reduces signs of aging, wrinkles, and fine lines. It also enhances the body’s natural repair process, leading to visibly healthier and plumper skin.
Some minerals and vitamins, like vitamin C, zinc, and copper, enhance collagen synthesis in our body. You can check with your healthcare professional for guidance to ensure it does not have any potential interactions with your existing medications. Also, always ensure you do not exceed the recommended daily intake amount for all the supplements combined.
As we age, the collagen production in our body decreases. This is the main reason for wrinkles and sagging skin. So, using collagen supplements to boost the collagen production in our body helps heal the skin from within and adds elasticity to it.
For most users, a typical dose of 2.5 to 10 grams has proven beneficial and effective in promoting healthier-looking skin and improved skin texture.
Yes, collagen can help in tightening skin wrinkles and loose skin. That’s because the skin loses its elasticity with lowered collagen levels in aged people. Collagen supplements can improve this condition by boosting the body’s collagen levels and enhancing the firmness of your skin.
But factors like age, genetics, health conditions, lifestyle, and overall skin condition also greatly affect how well these supplements work for individuals.
Collagen is generally found in our bones, tissues, and cartilage. It makes up at least 75% of the dry weight of our skin. So, taking oral collagen supplements provides structural support to your skin tissues. It improves the elasticity of the skin and makes it firm. Although results can vary for individuals, most users consuming such supplements have noticed hydrated and plumper skin.
Choosing the best collagen supplement for sagging skin can be a game-changer for your skin health. But remember, the key to reaping the full benefits is consuming the supplement you choose and how you integrate it into your overall health routine.
Always go the extra mile and couple these collagen supplements with a balanced diet and consistent skincare practices to ensure you get the most out of them. So, why wait?
Get started on your collagen supplement journey today.
Yes, Chef! winner Emily Brubaker leads the robust culinary program at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa
For Executive Chef Emily Brubaker, Omni La Costa Resort & Spa feels like home. She grew up just a mile-and-a-half away from the 400-acre property and fondly recalls walking the golf course perimeter as a kid. Though her ambitions led her away from San Diego for nearly two decades in which she honed her craft in some of the highest of high-profile Las Vegas restaurants—including triple Michelin-starred Joël Robuchon at MGM Grand—they ultimately brought her back to North County.

Today, the classically French-trained chef, who’s fresh off a victory on NBC’s Yes, Chef!, judged by Martha Stewart and José Andrés, oversees Omni La Costa Resort & Spa’s seven distinct dining concepts. Her goal is to elevate the resort’s culinary program with her creative, hyperlocal ingredient-driven approach while maintaining the Spanish- inspired flavors and fresh California coastal cuisine that are the bedrock of its culinary identity.
“The San Diego food scene is really growing, and in North County alone, it’s really exploded in the last five years,” Brubaker says. “There are Michelin stars, beautiful tasting menus, craft bakers, and all this food—when I was growing up in La Costa, it was fish tacos. Now there are really cool things popping up, and I’m so happy to be here to see where it’s going to go.”
Brubaker gives chefs de cuisine at each individual restaurant autonomy, however, her influence is evident across the resort.
For example, lobby restaurant Bar Traza serves as Omni La Costa’s culinary centerpiece and features bold Spanish flavors in a lively, social atmosphere. Brubaker overhauled the menu to be more consistent and centered on casual bites with that signature vibe. Think smoky paprika, vibrant citrus, and Spanish meats and cheeses.
At VUE, the focus is on seasonal offerings, California coastal cuisine, and Baja-inspired dishes. She and Chef de Cuisine Cameron Dixon change the menu biannually, which heading into summer, will highlight farm-fresh produce and hyperlocal ingredients—the resort even has its own herb garden and honeybee hives.

Poolside dining options are leaning into the country’s 250th this summer with a selection of classic American dishes with an Omni La Costa twist. And Bob’s Steak & Chop House (Brubaker is a trained butcher) offers a classic steakhouse experience with elevated service.
The chef and company also plan menus for special events at the resort where her creativity can really shine. For an upcoming National Ski Association dinner, the banquet hall will be transformed into an Alpine-themed winter wonderland complete with a snow machine, savory sausages, and melty, decadent raclette. A recent dinner was built around the Carlsbad Flower Fields and each course was matched to a color of ranunculus (Did you know pink dragonfruit are grown in North County? You do now.).
“It’s my zen to be in the kitchen playing with food,” Brubaker says.
Omni La Costa’s culinary program is a key part of the resort experience. And with Brubaker’s leadership, it’s becoming a draw for visitors and locals alike.
“These aren’t just hotel restaurants, these are restaurants that you should go to. They’re destinations, and I’m really hoping for the future that’s where we’re going,” Brubaker says.

Brubaker is also channeling her experience on Yes, Chef! into the culture at Omni La Costa—more emphasis on teamwork and collaboration, empowering her staff to share constructive critiques, and embracing different perspectives. Alongside her leadership role, Brubaker has become an advocate for mental health in the hospitality industry, serving as chief ambassador for the Burnt Chef Project and serves on the Board of Advisors for the Apex Culinary Program, where she mentors and develops future talent.
