Bazaar del Mundo is always a kaleidoscope of color and culture, but the Old Town shop known for Mexican-made decor will truly come to life for this month’s Latin American Festival and Mata Ortiz Pottery Market. The 36th annual celebration will bring more than 25 artists from Peru, Guatemala, Ecuador, Mexico, and other Latin American nations to sell their wares and show us how it’s done.
See artisans weave wool into area rugs, put finishing stencils on recreations of Mogollon pottery found in Chihuahua, and, special for 2018, watch Oaxacan wood-carvers Jacobo and María Ángeles turn wooden stumps into alebrijes, decorated with paints they’ve ground by hand. If their work seems familiar, there’s a good reason: They’re the very same artists who inspired Pixar’s animators to incorporate these mythological animal figures into the movie Coco.
