Lux Art Institute Goes Botanical With Angela Kallus

By Archana Ram

This month, Lux Art Institute doubles as a botanical garden thanks to its latest visiting talent, Angela Kallus. As part of the Encinitas museum’s artist-in-residence program, the Fort Worth–based painter will create five renditions of her signature rose acrylic relief paintings on canvas. The pieces are reminiscent of a baroque wedding cake, so it’s no surprise that Kallus starts the process with cake decorating tools before enhancing the shapes with transparent paint and spraying them with a matte varnish, yielding thousands of varied rosettes.

“I make the things I make because I want beauty and order and agency and perfection and complexity, amid chaos,” she says. “I make art that looks like something that it isn’t.”
