Mama’s Day at Hilton San Diego Bayfront

Queer Mvmnt Fest

DISCO RIOT’s Queer Mvmnt Fest aims to empower BIPOC, disabled, and LGBTQ movement artists with five days of intersectional programming. This includes short film screenings at Digital Gym Cinema (Wednesday), dance socials at The Loft and El Flow Dance Studio (Thursday and Friday), and dance workshops at San Diego City College Dance Studios (Saturday and Sunday). The festival highlight will be Saturday’s mainstage performance at the Seville Theatre, featuring a Q&A with UC San Diego Assistant Professor of Dance Bernard Brown. The dance workshops are free and all other events are $25 for general admission and $15 for artists, students, and low-income attendees.

Artivál Festival in El Cajon

This Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., downtown El Cajon will host its inaugural Artivál, an all-day celebration highlighting local musicians, makers, and businesses. The festival will host over 50 artists and creators, art installations, performances from Cassie B and Kimba Light, food trucks, an outdoor art gallery, and a wine and beer garden from the East County Arts Association. Festival entry is free, and wine and beer garden tickets (5 for $25; 10 for $45) and cocktail tickets ($15 each) will be sold onsite.

North Park Music Fest

Embrace the creative community of North Park during the annual North Park Music Fest, returning Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. with over 40 live performances at nine neighborhood venues. Backed by his Orleans Avenue Band, Shorty has become one of the bayou’s most revered musical spokespeople. Swamp rock musician JJ Grey and funk collective Dumpstaphunk will open Shorty’s upcoming concert at The Rady Shell, taking place Saturday at 6 p.m.. Tickets range from $65 to $167.

West Virginian Brad Paisley is one of country music’s veteran musicians and among its best-ever guitarists, a skillset he shows off at live shows. In Noah Haidle’s Birthday Candles, directed for the North Coast Repertory Theatre stage by David Ellenstein, Ernestine Ashworth ages from 17 to 101 years old. Her relationships and the cast of characters around her advance through life with one constant: her birthday celebration. Birthday Candles will officially open Sunday with performances at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; tickets are $55 for previews (Wednesday through Saturday) and $63 to $65 for the rest of its run.

La Llorona On The Blue Line at National City Depot

Hop along the trolley for Mabelle Reynoso’s La Llorona On The Blue Line, a time-traveling examination of haunting, grief, and collective memory. Visitors to National City Depot will traverse through a trio of time periods on the Blue Line— 1920, 1946 and 1982—and reckon with the past and presence of La Llorona, the famed folkloric ghost.
