New Restaurant: American Voodoo

Voodoo magic at Joshua Hamlin's new restaurant

By Troy Johnson

Jim Morrison had a vision like this: Barn wood and cute stuffed animal voodoo dolls handmade by the owner’s mother (try not to anger her). American Voodoo is a warm, shamanistic shack from San Diego filmmaker-cum-restaurateur Joshua Hamlin. For his Southern-inspired joint, he found his exec chef in Gustavo Cruz (ex-Arterra, Blanca, Bouchon) and pulled his buddy Scott Smith, formerly the No. 2 baker at Bread & Cie. Try the blinis with crème fraîche and smoked salmon or the grilled rib cap with Béarnaise sauce. Hamlin’s father toured with the Grateful Dead, which led to some serious time on the artistic commune. That explains the marching band and fire-breathers on opening night.
