New chef at La Valencia; Catania going into former Jack's

By Troy Johnson

La Valencia is speed-dating chefs at the current moment in time. Paul McCabe lasted less than six months at the property, after having been pulled away from Delicias. Now his successor, Daniel Barron, is leaving after a year at the Pink Lady. Our sources say a new chef has already been hired. The resort is pulling James Montejano back to San Diego. Montejano spent the last two-and-a-half years as exec chef of The Trident in Sausalito (a famed venue started by the Kingston Trio in the ’60s), Montejano was also the chef at the short-lived Jade Theater in Downtown San Diego from 2007-2008. Let’s hope the Pink Lady has sowed her wild oats and is ready to settle down with James. As for Barron, his last day at La Valencia is June 13. No word yet on where he’ll land afterward—but he’s a talent that should find safe harbor soon… More details on our announcement yesterday of Whisknladle Hospitality’s new concept, Catania. The 3,750 square-foot coastal Italian restaurant will go into the upstairs unit of the byzantine structure La Plaza (formerly known as Jack’s La Jolla). The fantastic Bluemotif Architecture (Cowboy Star, Prepkitchen, Solace & The Moonlight Lounge) will handle the build-out, set to open in early 2015…
