The Annual Heart & Soul Gala of Jewish Family Service of San Diego is being held on Mar. 9 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla.  This year’s theme, Believe in Love, celebrates the  2014 Mitzvah Award Honorees Carol and Rick Kornfeld for their commitment to providing opportunities to children through mentoring and caring support; and Karen Foster Silberman for her passion for women and teens living in a safe environment free of unhealthy relationships and abuse . A Special Tribute to remember Alice Cohn who was a supporter of the community and helped those facing hunger will also be a part of the program. The Gala is a major fundraise supporting the programs of JFS.

The Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute in La Jolla is one of four grantees to receive $800,000 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The funds will be used to conduct research on developmental neurotoxicity. The studies are focused on improving EPA’s ability to predict the potential health effects of chemical exposures. These awards are advancing the science and technological capability to model and predict how chemicals behave when they come into contact with biological systems.

The 2014 Victory Fund San Diego Champagne Brunch was held on Feb. 9 at the Catamaran Resort. Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema from Arizona was the featured speaker. Sinema is a member of the federal LGBT caucus of eight. Other participants were interim Mayor Todd Gloria, Assembly Majority Leader Toni Atkins, Congressman Mark Takano and CFO/COO of the Victory Fund, Torey Carter along with local board member Mattheus Stephens. Funds raised will support the work of the Victory Fund.
