The Association of Fundraising Professionals has announced that Philanthropist Malin Burnham will headline the event as Keynote Speaker, scheduled for November 14 at 11 a.m. The theme for the 45th Annual NPD is, “Reaching New Heights” is being held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds Exhibition Hall. The honorees include Gary and Mary West as Outstanding Philanthropists. UC San Diego is the Presenting Sponsor and San Diego Magazine is the Signature Sponsor.

9th annual Phil’s Big BBQ
On July 30, the 9th annual Phil’s Big BBQ was held at the Ballpark. Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County was the beneficiary of the $80,000 raised. Proceeds went to Operation Bigs, a one-to-one mentoring program of BBBS that provides support to children and families with an active duty military parent. Major sponsors included Phil’s BBQ, the San Diego Padres, Torrey Pines Bank, Richard & Richard Construction, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, and Air Cleaning Technology.

Bill Howe at the North County Food Bank’s inaugural golf tournament
The North County Food Bank, a chapter of the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank, held its inaugural golf tournament on July 24. Tri-City Medical Center was the Title Sponsor, The Spiva Foundation was the Presenting Sponsor. Other sponsors included Hub International, Bill Howe, and Wells Fargo. The tournament raised $59,000 for the North County Hunger Initiative, which aims to increase services to underserved families living in poverty in the North County communities.

The Seacrest Foundation Guardians of San Diego’s planning committee
The Seacrest Foundation Guardians of San Diego’s 26th Annual Golf, Tennis & Spa Day was held on July 24. The William Gumpert Foundation was the Presenting Sponsor for “Take a Swing for Seniors.” The $160,000 raised will benefit the Resident Assistance Fund of Seacrest Village Retirement Communities. Top sponsors included City National Bank, HPSI Purchasing Services, Hughes Marino, and WAXIE Sanitary Supply.
On August 13, The Wine Pub is hosting the 4th Annual Very Important Pooches. “Pup”arazzi will photograph San Diego’s socialite pups and their humans. The event includes a dress-up competition. Four-legged friends in tuxes and dresses will compete for the panel of judges. Proceeds will benefit Animal Rescuers Without Borders, an organization that will come to the aid of any animal in need that crosses its path.
St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center will present the 40th Haute with Heart Fashion on August 19 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel. Fashion Icon Sponsors include Barona Resort & Casino, St. Madeleine Sophie’s Auxiliary, and Sycuan Casino. Inaugural CaddyHack x4 Golf Tournament
Ernie Hahn, general manager at Valley View Casino Center, celebrated his 50th birthday by designating Boys to Men Mentoring as the beneficiary of the inaugural CaddyHack x4 Golf Tournament held at Morgan Run. “I wanted to celebrate my 50th year in a meaningful way,” said Hahn. A total of $113,000 was raised to help the organization expand its group mentoring to more schools across San Diego County.
On July 16, The Mitchell Thorp Foundation partnered with the San Diego Aviators World Team Tennis to host the Annual Pillars of Hope Tennis Smach. The event was held at the Omni La Costa Resort. The evening raised $95,000 which will go toward Mitchell Thorp Foundation’s four programs; Medical & Home Assistance Program, Healing and Rehabilitation Program, Conversion Mobility Van Program, and Youth Leadership Program.
