On May 24, Barrio Logan held the 2017 Opportunity for Impact at Tom Ham’s Restaurant on Shelter Island. Rana Sampson and Jerry Sanders were Honorary Chairs for the event. Executive Director Jose Cruse said, “I’m proud to announce that after all the gifts and sponsorships toward the event, we exceeded our goal by raising $525,000 towards our college prep programs for underserved students.” The Signature Sponsor was The Guild on 30th. Other sponsors included SDGE a Sempra Energy utility, Price Philanthropies, HP, Southwest and The San Diego Foundation.
The 17th Annual Superheroes for Youth Celebrity Waiter Luncheon was held on May 19 at the Jacobs Center. The beneficiary, STAR/PAL, is an organization that reaches children in need, striving to help them make positive choices for a brighter future by partnering them with law enforcement officers as mentors. $124,000 was raised for their youth programs at the luncheon. CoreCivic, SD Padres, San Diego Metropolitan Credit Union, Kearny Pearson Ford, Jack in the Box, Sycuan, US Bank, and EDCO were sponsors.
17th Annual Superheroes for Youth Celebrity Waiter Luncheon
The 2017 11th Annual Holes for Heroes Golf Classic has been scheduled for September 15 at the Lomas Santa Fe Country Club. The San Diego Downtown Breakfast Rotary Foundation is the Presenting Sponsor. Proceeds from the tournament benefit military veterans, wounded warriors and their families.
The San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy received two grants to fund the studies needed to move forward with the design and planning of the River Path Del Mar Phase 3 Extension Project. REI and The Malk Nature Fund have each granted the SDRVC $15,000. The funds will be used to cover the $30,000 cost of completing the topographical and right-of-way mapping and biological studies.
4SRanch-Del Sur Community Foundation, an affiliate of The San Diego Foundation, awarded $32,000 in grants to five organizations at its 10th Annual Grants Celebration on May 25 at the Ranch House at Del Sur. Those receiving grants were: Zoological Society of San Diego, Junior Achievement of San Diego County, Oak Valley Middle School Music Boosters, SOLE Effects, and Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego. The Chula Vista Charitable Foundation awarded $50,232 in funding to three organizations at its 7th Annual Grants Celebration on May 31 at the Barnhart Cancer Center. Those receiving funding were: San Diego Youth Symphony; Living Coast Discovery Center; and The Arc of San Diego.
4SRanch-Del Sur Community Foundation
Home Start, Inc. held its 45th Anniversary Blue Ribbon Gala on April 22 at the Hilton San Diego Resort. The gala, “Vintage Circus-themed” evening raised $102,000 for programs that provide critical assistance to children and families throughout San Diego County.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego opened a Center of Innovation on May 30 at the Ron Roberts Family Branch with support from Raytheon, a tech industry leader specializing in global defense, civil government and cybersecurity. The Center is funded by a $5 million grant from Raytheon and will provide military youth access to advanced technologies to stimulate creative approaches to STEM exploration.
KPBS, San Diego was named the “Most-Admired News Outlet” with the inaugural Malin Burnham Awards, organized by Reality Changers. KPBS General Manager Tom Karlo said,”Getting this award means that we have earned the trust of our listeners and viewers – something that we value most of all.”
