San Diego Magazine’s Best Restaurants Party
Where: Pirch, Westfield UTC, 4545 La Jolla Village Dr.
When: June 13, 5:15-8 p.m.
It’s our biggest food issue of the year. Readers and myself name our best restaurants of 2018. The issue’s out now. The party is this week. Seventeen of the best restaurants in town will be on hand serving samples of what their kitchens do best, including Addison, Cowboy Star, Donovan’s, George’s, The Grant Grill, Herb & Wood, Juniper & Ivy, The Lot, Madison, The Marine Room, Pisco Rotisserie, Puesto, Searsucker, Solare, and Trust. Then there’s drinks from 1888 Rum, Cutwater Spirits, Longship Brewery, Solar Rain, and Viewpoint. It’s held in one hell of a fascinating place—Pirch, the best kitchen showroom in town. I can’t afford any of the stuff in there, but I still love to gawk and dream.

Terra’s 20th Anniversary
Where: Terra, 7091 El Cajon Blvd., La Mesa
When: June 19–24, reserve a time
Everyone pays lip service to doing sustainable, local food these days. But one of the more underrated chefs who’s been doing it long before everyone had to is Jeff Rossman of Terra American Bistro. Dude’s been doing it right for 20 years now. And this month Terra’s celebrating that two-decade mark (a miracle in the die-quick restaurant world) by serving a three-course menu reliving their debut year (1998). Inspired by pop culture hits of that year, it’ll include Semi-Charmed Kind of Rice, Something About Mary’s Chicken, and Bitter Sweet Symphony for dessert. If you haven’t tried Rossman’s food, it’s time. If you have, it’s time again.
Cost: $32.95
Summer Grain Dinner
Where: Catania, 7863 Girard Avenue, La Jolla
When: June 25, 6:30 p.m.
Whisknladle Hospitality does things right. Now that they’ve parted with their Prepkitchen concept, chef Ryan Johnston is focusing on their two stellar La Jolla spots: Whisknladle and Catania. Catania’s the stunner, with the patio and that automatic shade they raise with great ceremony every night to watch the sun burn out over the Pacific. For this dinner Johnston and Catania exec chef Dusty Karagheusian are partnering with the responsible-food nonprofit Berry Good Food Foundation, plus Jack Ford of Taj Farms and former Catania chef Vince Schofield for a six-course meal of pizzas and pastas all made with grains from local farmers, with wine pairings.
