Gold Shield Gala San Diego Police Foundation
The San Diego Police Foundation held its 2nd Annual Gold Shield Gala on Nov. 9 at Fairbanks Country Club. Sempra Energy, Valley View Casino, Motorola Solutions, Guardian Towing and California Retna Associates were sponsors for the event which raised $91,000 for the Foundation. The funds allow the Foundation to continue providing critical equipment, training and outreach programs to the San Diego Police Department.
The University of San Diego’s 2013 Founders’ Gala was held on Nov. 2 at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. “An Unforgettable Night” honored university founders Bishop Charles Francis Buddy and Mother Rosalie Clifton Hill. The event raised $580,000 to support student scholars through the Founders’ Endowed Scholarship Fund. Cox was the Legacy sponsor and Heritage sponsors included the Shiley Foundation, Bartell Hotels and Coca-Cola. Benefactors were Elizabeth and Manfred Swarovski. USD President Mary Lyons greeted guests along with the Swarovskis.

Project Concern International held its annual Hands Across Borders Gala on Oct. 26 at the Omni La Costa Resort in Carlsbad. The 2013 Humanitarian Award was presented to Michaela Walsh, Founding President of Women’s World Banking, for her leadership in empowering women in some of the poorest countries worldwide through micro-enterprise. Karen and Ed Mercaldo of the Gem Foundation received PCI’s Founder’s Award for their support of the organizations life-changing programs worldwide. The event raised $425,000 to benefit PCI’s programs in communities around the world. Sponsors included Hoehn Motors, Southwest Airlines, Viejas, Cubic Corporation and Pfizer.
AT&T presented the Poway Center for the Performing Arts Foundation a $13,000 check on Nov. 19 to support the Arts in Education Initiative. The gift will help POW! Foundation to continue to offer a program that reaches 3,000 children in grades K-12 in the Poway Unified School District. AT&T’s gift will help support two components of the Arts in Education Initiative: Introduction to Instruments and Missoula Children’s Theatre.
The San Diego Building Owners & Managers Association held its 20th annual “Give From Your Heart” gift drive to benefit Promises2Kids. BOMA delivered 300 collection bins to 150 business and office building throughout San Diego County and San Diego County are encouraged to drop off new and unwrapped gifts to the bins up until Dec. 12. The gifts will be distributed to foster children within San Diego County.
The University of California, San Diego received a $1 million gift from San Diego-based satellite and digital communications innovator ViaSat. The Arthur C. Clarke Center for Human Imagination, honoring the vision of “2001: A Space Odyssey” will continue Clarke’s greatest legacy: imagination. In recognition of this donation, ViaSat has been named Founding Partner of the Clarke Center. The gift will support the Clarke Center’s operations and imagination research; a portion will also be used to establish the Arthur C. Clarke Center Endowment to ensure the Clarke Center’s sustainability.
Faith Lutheran School in Vista received a $5,000 education grant from the Barona Bank of Mission Indians. The money will be used to purchase the Houghton Mifflin Reading Program for grades K through 5. “Reading is one of the cornerstones to success and we are proud to have the opportunity to provide these bright young minds with access to leading educational materials,” said Clifford LaChappa, Chairman of the Barona Band of Mission Indians.
The Bank of America Charitable Foundation named Workshops For Warriors as a recipient of the 2013 Neighborhood Builders award. The program is a strategic investment that couples leadership training with a $200,000 unrestricted grant for high-performing nonprofits that have made a significant impact addressing needs related to community development, critical needs or workforce development and education. Nonprofit leaders gain valuable skills and apply funding where it is most needed for maximum local impact. Workshops For Warriors is an organization dedicated to training, certifying and placing veterans in manufacturing careers.
