Mini-Concert | Tim Flannery, guitar | Athenaeum Music & Arts Library

About the Event

With a voice as smooth as Kentucky bourbon and a heart worn on both sleeves, Tim Flannery’s performances ebb and flow with brilliant melodies and soaring harmonies. A talented and prolific singer-songwriter, Flan’s music enjoys radio support across the planet, from the shores of Ireland to beach towns up and down the California coast.

Throughout his baseball career, Tim Flannery had his guitar in hand. His uncle, Hal Smith—hero of the 1960 World Series with the Pittsburgh Pirates—was one of Flan’s earliest baseball and musical influences. “He was also a songwriter and carried a Gibson J 35 everywhere. I grew up never knowing you couldn’t do both.”

Flan writes songs about his family roots, love, and the surrender that comes when you understand some things are out of your control. He writes about baseball and being on the road, the call of the highway, and the beacon of home. He has an ace band, the Lunatic Fringe, that bring his songs roaring to life in various musical genres like bluegrass, country, and rock.

Flan has three World Series Championship rings as a third-base coach with the San Francisco Giants, and he has released 14 albums of original music over the years.

He and his wife, Donna, created the Love Harder Project, a 501(c)3 non-profit charitable organization dedicated to anti-bullying and funded by proceeds from his performances and public donations.

In 2020, Flannery developed a life-threatening staph infection, but after two of the hardest months of his life was able to recover at home with help from his ever-loving family.

Now Tim Flannery is healthy and ready to play shows with his band. He is currently booking shows and writing new songs for his latest album, Waiting On A Miracle which will be released in 2022.

Free concerts at noon every Monday year-round . . . no wonder the Mini-Concerts are the longest-running and one of the most popular classical music series at the library! This series was founded by Glenna Hazleton in 1970 at the Athenaeum, and has been going strong ever since. The concerts feature both local and touring musicians, prize-winning students, university music faculty members, local chamber ensembles. . . and the repertoire also includes jazz, folk, and world music. There are no reservations, no tickets . . . just line up at the side door of the Athenaeum before noon. (Donations are always welcome!) Mini-Concerts take place every Monday at noon and last about an hour.

The concerts will be in person at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library. There are no physical tickets for these events. Doors open at 11:50 a.m. Seating is first-come; first-served. These events will be presented in compliance with State of California and County of San Diego health regulations as applicable at the time of each concert.
