Word on the Street

Richard Blais’ casual eatery set to open in November

The Crack Shack, a new restaurant from chef Richard Blais, is taking shape right next door to his acclaimed Juniper and Ivy on Kettner Boulevard in time for a mid-November opening.

Designed by Bluemotif Architecture, the restaurant will have plenty of outdoor seating and ordering will be done at a walk-up counter. The menu revolves around eggs and fried and grilled chicken, and will serve breakfast foods and sandwiches well into the evening.

More dwellings coming to Little Italy

The city’s building boom continues with a new plan for more apartments and condos in Little Italy.

A developer recently filed a proposal to replace the Days Inn at 1919 Pacific Highway with an eight-story, 110-unit residential complex. The project is still in the early stages, and Civic San Diego will review the design plans on November 3 and 4.

Pacific Highway has been busy with construction activity, from the 41-story residential tower on Pacific Highway and Broadway to two new hotels at Lane Field, and the new Hilton Garden Inn and Homewood Suites on Pacific Highway and Hawthorn.

Southcrest community to get new park

The Southcrest neighborhood will soon have an open space with trails and a skate park.

Southcrest Trails Park will span nearly six acres when it is complete. Civic San Diego has developed about half of the space and recently secured funding to finish the public project.

Tracking Turnover

Another grocer shutters

In case you missed it, eight cities around the county will soon lose a grocery store when Fresh & Easy closes up shop.

Just a month after Haggen announced its plans to close all of its California markets, including 19 in San Diego, Fresh & Easy announced it is liquidating all of its 97 stores across three states and is looking for a buyer. The closure affects 3,000 employees who will be laid off.

The grocery chain was launched by British giant Tesco and marketed itself as a European version of Trader Joe’s. It has struggled to make a profit since launching in 2007.

What company would you like to see take over the spaces that Fresh & Easy is leaving behind? Tell us in the comments!
