The President’s Volunteer Service Award, a national honor intended to recognize companies and citizens that demonstrate a commitment to community involvement, hosted a recognition ceremony on Apr. 4. Honorees included employees from Bridgepoint Education and its two academic institutions, Ashford University and University of the Rockies. To receive the award, employees had to donate more than 100 hours to community service. Andrew Clark, president and chief executive officer for Bridgepoint Education said, “Over the years, employees at Bridgepoint Education, Ashford University, and University of the Rockies have committed their time and effort in giving back to the communities they serve.”

The Notables of San Diego Symphony held its Wine&Wears fundraiser on Apr. 6 at the Westgate Hotel. The event raised $45,000 to support the Family Festival “Best & Brightest” side-by-side concert and other artistic, music education and community engagement programs. The event chaired by Joyce Glazer, Linda Karimi and Lori Walton, was sponsored by Westgate Hotel, Margarets the Couture Cleaner, San Diego Foundation, San Diego Magazine with wines provided by Wilson Creek Winery and Old Harbor Distilling Co. providing specialty cocktails.
The 2nd annual dinner symposium, “Screens, Genes & The Choices We Make: A Conversation on Research, Treatment and Lifestyle,” was held on Mar. 23 at the Del Mar Marriott Hotel. A total of $25,000 was pledged to Susan G. Komen San Diego in just four minutes.

The mentor conference was held on Mar. 12 at St. Luke’s Church in La Mesa, to assist girls with discovering career opportunities, setting and achieving goals, and overcoming obstacles to success. The 6th Annual Live Your Dream Awards Luncheon was held on Apr. 9 at Marina Village. Four awards were presented to women with cash grants for education and training.

The 16th Annual Celebrity Waiter Luncheon is being held on May 6 at Jacobs Center Celebration Hall. Dan Shea is the Superhero for Youth Award honoree. Proceeds benefit STAR/PAL to bring youth and law enforcement together to build safer communities.
Higgs Fletcher & Mack has awarded its fourth $4,500 California Western School of Law Diversity Scholarship to Beshoy Shehata, a 2017 Juris Doctor candidate. Shehata was selected for demonstrating ethical and civic leadership and for providing services to underrepresented groups in the community. He is the first college graduate in his family.
