Tijuana is putting a gourmet spin on the quintessential American sandwich

Why trek to Tijuana for a burger? Maybe the line at In-N-Out rivals the northbound wait at San Ysidro. Or, because some surprisingly creative carne combos are happening south of the border. Here, three Tijuana eateries are leading the pack.

The menu at Amis in Pasaje Amistad spans nine creations, all of which come on freshly baked bread. Stars include La Pesto (pesto, bacon, and mozzarella) and La Buffalo (feta, Buffalo sauce, and ranch).

In the gastronomic alleyway Colectivo Nueve, Indie Burgers’ tagline says it all: “F**king delicious.” Proof lies in the Cochi: a half-beef, half-pork patty topped with bacon and carnitas swimming in barbecue sauce.

Barrikas serves up several five-star sandwiches the size of skyscrapers, including the Regia (fajita-marinated beef, ham, Monterey cheese, bacon, and avocado). To top it off, kids eat free Monday through Thursday.
