Oh, Christmas Tree!

Ocean Beach's towering star pine is an evergreen veteran

By Kimberly Cunningham | Photos by Mike McCarthy

Every December in Ocean Beach, the lighting of the Christmas tree at the foot of Newport Avenue kicks off the funky beach town’s annual holiday parade. This year, the 40-foot, 114-year-old evergreen proved to be a veteran of sorts. In 2003, 60 feet of the same tree served as OB’s annual Christmas tree, donated by the Troncellito family of nearby Brighton Avenue.

So how does one go about transporting a 40-foot tree to the sand? Click the photo gallery below to see.

Fun fact: The star pine, which originates from New Caledonia off the coast of  Australia and New Zealand, is also known as the Hawaiian Christmas tree. Mele Kalikimaka!
