The San Diego Foundation 2014 give BIG event was held on May 6. The online giving event generated $921,782 in donations and $200,000 from its sponsors, US Bank, Barney & Barney Foundation, Waitt Foundation, AT&T, and Mission Healthcare. In 24 hours 5,942 gifts were received benefiting 350 charities. Adrienne Vargas, Chief Giving Officer of The San Diego Foundation, said “We have always known that San Diegans are generous. When we asked them to support this great cause, they certainly answered. The San Diego Foundation giveBIG was held in conjunction with Give Local America, a national day-of-giving.

The James M. Cox Foundation announced a $1.5 million grant to the USS Midway Museum on May 19. This is the largest grant in Midway’s 10-year history. The grant will be used to enhance Midway’s education programs, including a new overnight program for 4-6 year-olds and the expansion of the STEM education scholarship program. The USS Midway was christened on March 20, 1945 by Barbara Cox, the daughter of the founder of Cox Communications.

On May 15 the University of California San Diego announced a $7.5 million gift from Pauline Foster in support of the new cancer care hospital at the UC San Diego Jacobs Medical Center. The facility will be named “The Pauline and Stanley Foster Hospital for Cancer Care,” in consideration of her charitable contribution. The donation will be combined with a one-to-one match from the Jacobs Medical Center Challenge grant, for a total of $15 million in gifts. Encompassing three floors of Jacobs Medical Center, The Pauline and Stanley Foster Hospital for Cancer Care will be home to medical staff specially trained in caring for the complex needs of patients with cancer. It will be the only in-patient facility of its kind in San Diego County.

Millennium Laboratories presented a $10,000 donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County as well as bicycles that will be distributed to children participating in the program. “Due to current funding and volunteer shortages, these children often wait more than a year before they can be matched, said Millennium Laboratories CEO Brock Hardaway. “I’m proud that Millennium’s employees and I can support the program and give back to the community in a meaningful way.”

In celebration of Jewish American Heritage Month, Union Bank has partnered with KPBS to honor three Jewish Americans as local heroes. The 2014 Jewish American Heritage honorees are: Helene Bortz and Myrice Goldberg, co-founders of San Diego’s G’mach, and Ed Samilijan, founder and treasurer of Camp Mountain Chai. They were recognized at a private dinner celebration with their families and executives from KPBS and Union Bank. The Local Heroes program pays tribute to exemplary leaders who are making a difference and enriching the lives of others by improving their community, region and the world at large. The 2014 Jewish American Heritage Month honorees demonstrate a shared commitment to providing their communities with the tools to thrive in today’s changing world.

AT&T teamed up with Junior Achievement on May 7 to mentor high school students on topics such as decision-making, career planning, and interview preparation at the Trade Street campus. Aspire Mentoring Academy is a part of AT&T Aspire, AT&T’s $350 million investment in education. “The Aspire Mentoring Academy provides an opportunity for employees to support the professional development of San Diego youth,” said Christine Moore, AT&T director of external affairs. “Our hope is to help them stay on track to graduate from high school and succeed in college, the workforce and beyond.” 

gap intelligence’s second annual “Drives For Rides” golf tournament was held on May 2 at Riverwalk Golf Club. A total of $32,000 was raised to support the Emilio Nares Foundation. Sponsors included The Doyle Family, The Corrao Group, UPS, Silvergate Bank, Continental Maritime, Hughes Marino and Shea Realty.

San Diego Humane Society and SPCA’s 20th Annual Walk for Animals was held on May 10 at NTC Park – Liberty Station. An estimated 6,000 people and approximately 2,500 dogs participated and raised $450,000 to ensure that every homeless animal can find a loving home. Sponsors included Petco Foundation, Petco, Phil’s B.B.Q., Underground Elephant and Ralphs.

AFP National Philanthropy Day 2014 has announced Sharp HealthCare as the Presenting Sponsor of this year’s event. SDG&E is the Community Engagement Sponsor.  The luncheon is scheduled for Oct. 28 at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel.  According to Bill Littlejohn, Chair of this year’s event, “We are planning to tell a compelling story celebrating how the gift of time, treasure and talent impacts the greater good of our community.” Nominations are being accepted until 5 p.m. on May 30. npd2014.org
