Last week we were treated to a sneak peek of the Old Globe’s brand new, world premiere musical, Bright Star. The show was conceived by actor/comedian Steve Martin and singer/songwriter Edie Brickell, based on their Grammy-winning collaboration Love Has Come for You.
“We had the confidence [based on the success of the album],” Martin says. “All we needed was the subject—and a story.”
Artistic director Barry Edelstein has known Martin for years, and worked with him on The Public Theater’s production of As You Like It. Two years ago, Martin gave Edelstein an early draft of Bright Star.
“Even back then, before development, it was deeply moving,” Edelstein describes. “I found myself weeping.”
But expect some laughs, too—in true Martin style. “There are human issues, family issues, and romance,” says veteran Broadway director Walter Bobbie (Chicago). “It’s about pain, loss, and redemption—with a lot of laughs.”
Here’s a look at two songs from the show, the title anthem “Bright Star” (performed by A.J. Shively who plays Billy) and the lullaby-esque ballad “Back in the Day” (performed by Carmen Cusack who plays Alice).
