The 26th annual Mama’s Day was held on May 12 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine. Presented by Nordstrom and hosted by Sycuan, the event raised $178,000 for Mama’s Kitchen. The funds raised will provide 56,794 home-delivered meals for men, women and children affected by AIDS or cancer throughout San Diego County. Alberto Cortés, executive director, Mama’s Kitchen said, “I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the volunteers, sponsors, guests, donors and Mama’s Kitchen staff for their support in fulfilling our mission of providing nutritious meals for our San Diego neighbors in need.”
Liver Life Walk
American Liver Foundation’s Pacific Coast Division held its 19th Annual Liver Life Walk on May 13. The event was held at Liberty Station with 500 walkers participating. A total of $70,000 was raised to support medical research, educate patients, families, caregivers and healthcare professionals about liver wellness and disease prevention.
The United Way of San Diego County “Changing the Odds Community Breakfast,” held on May 10 at the San Diego Convention Center, raised $200,000, which includes $25,000 raised on-site. Solar Turbines was the Champion Sponsor and Higgs Fletcher & Mack, California Bank & Trust, Geico and AT&T were also sponsors. All funds raised go directly to United Way to fund various initiatives and programs. In addition, bags were distributed for use as part of the Stamp Out Hunger food drive sponsored by The Food Bank.
The 21st Anniversary of Meet the Chefs was held on April 23 at the Hilton Del Mar. The event raised $100,000 to benefit Casa de Amparo’s programs that treat and prevent child abuse and neglect and service foster children and transitional age foster youth. Participating restaurants and chefs included: American Restaurant, Randy Gruber; coastalKITÇHEN at the Hilton Del Mar; Pamplemousse Grille, Jeffrey Strauss; Poseidon, Michele Velez; and Red Tracton’s Mourad Jamal & Pedro Rodriguez.
Fern Street Circus
Fern Street Circus has recently received a $15,310 grant from the Neighborhood Reinvestment Program at the recommendation of County Supervisor Ron Roberts. Three grants were received from the California Arts Council: $18,000 in support of the Circus’ 2017 Neighborhood Tour; $16,200 for its After-School Circus Program; and $5,000 for hiring a consultant to write a practical marketing and public relations plan.
Father Joe’s Villages held its Children’s Charity Galon on May 13 at the US Grant Hotel. The $500,000 raised will support the therapeutic childcare center at Father Joe’s for kids age 12 and younger.
American Red Cross Shelter of Hope
The American Red Cross of San Diego/Imperial Counties concluded its annual Shelter of Hope Campaign on May 15. The goal was to raise $500,000 which was reached on May 15. The final $40,000 came from anonymous donors and $10,000 from Kaiser Permanente. The money raised will fund food, shelter and immediate needs for families displaced by home fires and other disasters, install smoke alarms in underserved communities to prevent home fire deaths.
The San Diego Foundation has granted $442,000 to 11 programs that will connect, protect and increase access to nature for underserved children and families throughout the San Diego region. The 2017 Opening the Outdoors Program will support collaborative projects that strengthen education and environmental efforts.
The San Diego Women’s Foundation is holding its 17th annual Grants Celebration on June 1 at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice. “We Rise by Lifting Others” will grant $200,000 to combat youth homelessness across the region. Sponsors of the event include Dowling & Yahnke Wealth Management, Wells Fargo and Morgan Stanley.
