University of San Diego Founders Gala was held on November 11 at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on campus. Maj. Gen. William M. Matz Jr., a USD graduate, was the Honorary Chair of the Gala which was also a Salute to Veterans. US Bank was the Presenting Sponsor and Bartell Hotels and Coca-Cola were Legacy Sponsors. The evening raised a record-setting $1.3 million to enhance the Founders Endowed Scholarship Fund in support of USD undergraduate, graduate and law students and will also create a new, endowed scholarship fund, dedicated to USD student-veterans. USD President James T. Harris III, DEd addressed the 600 people in attendance.

National Philanthropy Day honorees
On November 14 the Association of Fundraising Professionals, San Diego Chapter held its 45th Annual National Philanthropy Day luncheon which was held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Those being honored included Gary and Mary West as Outstanding Philanthropists and San Diego County Credit Union as Outstanding Philanthropic Corporation. Philanthropist Malin Burnham was the Keynote Speaker delivering an inspiring message to fundraising professionals as well as to philanthropists in attendance. UC San Diego was the Presenting Sponsor and San Diego Magazine was the Signature Sponsor.
Father Joe’s Villages served 600 traditional holiday meals on Thanksgiving Day to veterans, families and children living at Father Joe’s Villages. A lunch was served at the Paul Mirabile Center and dinner was served at the Joan Kroc Center. Deacon Jim Vargas, President and CEO was present to offer the Blessing.

San Diego Youth Services
Walter Philips, CEO of San Diego Youth Services, began a 50K run on November 20 with the goal of raising $50K and awareness to homeless youth in the city as part of National Homeless Youth Awareness Month. To date, the event called Walter Hits the Streets for Homeless Youth, has raised $18,000. Donations were accepted through the month of November.
Physiologist John B. West, MD, PhD, has made a $2 million gift to establish the John B. West Endowed Chair in Respiratory Physiology. His gift contributes to the Campaign for UC San Diego. The endowed chair will provide support for a faculty member in the Division of Physiology at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. Endowed chairs provide a dedicated source of funds, in perpetuity, to support the research, teaching and service activities of the chair holder.
Mama’s Kitchen and Village Hillcrest hosted the 26th annual Tree of Life Candlelight Vigil and Tree Lighting Ceremony on December 1. The ceremony, sponsored by AIDS Healthcare Foundation and The Gay and Lesbian Fund for San Diego, commemorates World AIDS Day, and honors those affected by AIDS as well as recognizing the leadership efforts made to end the world epidemic.

Riley Special Day School
Jackson Design and Remodeling teamed up with Miles Himmel and the Larry Himmel Neighborhood Foundation for a project at the Riley Special Day School in Clairemont. Two murals depicting ocean scenes were painted on the exterior of two classroom buildings by mural artist Tom Plonka. Riley students have social/emotional/behavioral needs that require a small, specialized setting that provides them intense, individualized support in academics and emotional well-being.
Home Start held its 10th Annual Hallo-Wine Fall Festival on October 28. The festival held each October in recognition of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, raised $25,000 for the organization’s programs that provide critical assistance to vulnerable children and families throughout San Diego County.
Trauma Intervention Programs of San Diego won the Starbucks Upstanders Challenge of $25,000. Non-profits were nominated and voted on with the help of Indi.com for the Upstanders Challenge. A panel of judges selected the 25 winning organizations who are making a difference in their communities and each will receive a $25,000 grant from the Starbucks Foundation.
