The 41st Annual Association of Fundraising Professionals San Diego Chapter National Philanthropy Day Celebration was held on Nov. 7 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. Those honored were: Pamela Wygod, Keri Jucha, Whitney Southwick, Geoffrey Graham, Mission Federal Credit Union, Susan Atkins, Joyce Glazer and The California Endowment. The luncheon included a special tribute to Murray Galinson in memoriam. The San Diego community has been celebrating philanthropy with an annual awards event since 1972.

Eight Deputy DAs were honored by the Board of Supervisors with proclamations recognizing their contributions to public safety over the past year. The proclamations were announced at the Oct. 8 board meeting. “I’m very proud of the outstanding work of these Deputy District Attorneys,” District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis said. “They truly represent the dedication and quality of our entire prosecutorial team.” The Deputy District Attorneys honored by the board for their commitment to public safety include Michael Runyon, Anthony Campagna, Chris Lindberg, Dino Paraskevopoulos, Joe McLaughlin, Wendy Patrick, Robert Eacret and Laurie Hauf.

Words A!ive is holding its 10th Annual Author’s Luncheon, Celebrating Success Transforming Lives on Nov. 23 at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines. The luncheon features best-selling author Alice Hoffman. AT&T, Gurtin Fixed Income, Warwick’s, Geppetto’s and Cubic are the sponsors. Funds raised will support the mission of Words A!ive to open opportunities for success by inspiring a commitment to reading.

Sandy Mayberry and April Langwell completed The Marine Corps Marathon on Oct. 27. Together they raised $5,000 from friends and family to support Warriors & Quiet Waters, an organization which brings wounded warriors from Naval Medical Center Balboa and the Wounded Warrior Battalion at Camp Pendleton to Montana for a six day program of fly fishing and recreation. ” We all have the gift of freedom. We have that gift because of the sacrifices of the Marines and every other branck of our military,” said Sandy Mayberry.

Make-A-Wish Golf Classic

The 25th annual Make-A-Wish Golf Classic was held on Oct. 21 at the Maderas Golf Club. The tournament raised $93,000 to grant wishes to children suffering with terminal illnesses. Sponsors included Samsung, Sycuan Casino, Sovereign Capital and Spinal Elements. Several celebrities and athletes participated in the tournament including baseball player Steve Finley.

The Jackie Robinson Family YMCA’s annual Halloween Carnival

The Jackie Robinson Family YMCA held its 15th annual Halloween Carnival for the community of Southeast San Diego on Oct. 31. Kids were invited to participate in a variety of activities including games, crafts, entertainment and trick or treat. The Y provided the community with a safe place to go on Halloween night.

San Diego OASIS received $98,000 from Anthem Blue Cross for the CATCH Healthy Habits program. San Diego OASIS has been focusing on successful aging and intergenerational community service for the past 30 years. CATCH benefits two generations: children K-5 and adults 50 plus. This year, the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Diego being funded by the grant: 4S Ranch, Baker Branch, Clairemont Branch, Payne Branch, Encanto Branch, and the Oakes Branch.

The LightBridge Hospice Community Foundation held its 5th annual LightBridge Walk on Oct. 20. A total of $34,000 was raised to help fund special programs for San Diegans receiving hospice care. The focus of this year’s event was “Honoring our Heroes” which included patients, loved ones and veterans.

The Red Door Interactive Philanthropy Committee delivered 75 books to the Whitman Elementary School in Clairemont on Oct. 29. Red Door Interactive created the Caring Hearts Philanthropy Committee a year ago in an effort to foster a workplace that supports giving back to the community.  The committee learned of the organization called First Book whose goal is to provide access to new books for children in need.
