FIRST LOOK: Bird Rock Coffee Roasters

Iconic S.D. coffee roasters open second location in Little Italy

By Troy Johnson | Photography by Jaime Fritsch

The third wave of coffee is in full swing. And Bird Rock Coffee Roasters was one of the first in the water, obsessing over joe near La Jolla starting in 2006. They specialize in direct-trade, dealing directly with coffee growers to source the best, sustainable beans. Roast Magazine named ’em “Roaster of the Year” in 2012. And now they’ve finally opened their second location in Little Italy (2295 Kettner Blvd.)—a 1,400 square-foot shrine to coffee obsessives everywhere. It looks like the first of many big moves for Bird Rock, including a 3,000 square-foot wholesale distribution center on Morena Blvd. Like everything shiny and new in Little Italy, it’s a beautiful little space.
