On this week’s episode of Happy Half Hour, hosts Erin Chambers Smith and Troy Johnson and producer Archana Ram share all the latest in dining and drinking news, like news that UTC will bring a slew of cool new eateries to the Westfield shopping center, including Michelin-starred dumpling house Din Tai Fung. We also share news about the closing of OB Warehouse and what will takes its place in Ocean Beach.

Our special guest, Chuck Samuelson of Kitchens For Good—whose cooking career includes serving as executive chef at Jake’s Del Mar—joins us to talk about how his local organization is working to break the cycle of food waste and hunger. Their efforts range from rescuing “ugly” produce to getting people out of poverty via (free!) culinary training.

In today’s Hot Topics, Samuelson chimes in about a “Robin Hood” restaurant in Madrid that’s feeding the poor by charging the rich.

We also talk Small Bites, including great date night restaurants like Starlite or Oscar’s Mexican Seafood’s new Encinitas outpost, as well as Liquid Courage about a beverage director who made the jump from finance to cocktails with Urbn Restaurant Group.
