The Living Coast Discovery Center’s 10th annual Farm to Bay culinary event brought in a record-setting $114,000 to support the nonprofit zoo/aquarium’s coastal wildlife, education, and sustainability programs. Chefs Matt Gordon of Blue Bridge Hospitality, Will Gustwiller of Eclipse Chocolate Bar & Bistro, and Wrench & Rodent Seabasstropub’s Davin Waite, along with local restaurants, craft breweries, and wineries wowed the crowd of over 350 during the popular celebration at the center on San Diego Bay Aug. 3. Also, nearly all of the waste from the event was recycled or composted, thus diverting it from landfills.

“We are incredibly thankful for the community’s support in making this event such a success and allowing us to continue our mission—inspiring people to connect with and care for our coastal environment,” said Living Coast Executive Director Ben Vallejos.

Reunited siblings in foster care bond at Promises2Kids’s four-day summer camp

Early last month, Promises2Kids held its 11th annual Camp Connect, where foster youth separated from their siblings in the system get a chance to reconnect and bond over fun activities, like ziplining, horseback riding, archery, and rock climbing. In 2008, Promises2Kids and the County of San Diego researched ways to support children in maintaining their family bonds when it is impossible for them to live together in the same home. The result was Camp Connect’s four-day summer camp. This year, 119 kids and teens from San Diego, Riverside, and Imperial counties participated.
