The Lemon Grove HEAL Zone Initiative facilitated by Community Health, received a $1 million grant from Kaiser Permanente at a celebration held on July 14 at the Berry Street Park. Kaiser has expanded their Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) interventions to promote healthier communities and healthier people. Community Health Improvement Partners is an organization whose mission is to advance long-term solutions to priority health needs through collaboration and community engagement.

San Diego County Credit Union has partnered with the San Diego County Office of Education and iHeartMedia radio stations in support of Live Well San Diego to collect school supplies for students experiencing homelessness. Supplies for “Stuff the Bus” can be dropped of at SDCCU Branch locations as well as other locations throughout the county. Two SDCCU Stuff the Bus school buses will also be on tour to commect items through mid-August.
USO has received a $558,000 grant from the Kenneth T. and Eileen Norris Foundation to support family strengthening services including case management, counseling and relationship building programs. The Norris Foundation supports programs that advance better health and intellectual enlightenment through education, cultivation of the arts, individual responsibility, freedom and dignity. “Our new Norris Support Center for Military Families will empower us to assess the needs of military families and provide family support services,” sand Arne Nelson, CEO of USO San Diego.

The 70th Jewel Ball: Shangri-La is being held on Aug. 6 at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. Kathryn Gayner, is the 2016 Jewel Ball Chair. Lisa Betyar, Las Patronas President, said “Our worthy beneficiaries inspire us and challenge us to meet their ever-growing needs.” Some of the major beneficiaries if this year’s Jewel Ball are: Birch Aquarium, Episcopal Community Services, Generate Hope, Inc., The Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation and The Maritime Museum Association of San Diego.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego hosted the annual Summer Games at Miramar College on July 15. Members competed in an Olympic-styled competition and included basketball, dodgeball, kickball, soccer, swimming, and track & field. The James Bronner Family Branch of Valley Center received the Sportsmanship Award for showing the most sportsmanship throughout the day. Partners for the event included GEICO, Chicken of the Sea, American Medical Response, Twice The Ice, US Foods and San Diego Unified School District CSA.
The 21st Annual Wine Tasting fundraiser is being held on Aug. 2 to benefit Mama’s Kitchen. This year’s theme is, “Show your True Colors.” Park & Rec in University Heights is hosting the event. All proceeds will go to the daily operations of Mama’s Kitchen to prepare and deliver three meals a day, seven days a week, at no charge to men, women and children affected by AIDS/HIV or cancer.

National University and the San Diego Padres honored 10 recipients of the National University Military Scholarship at the July 17 Padres game. The jointly funded National University Military Scholarship Program recognizes currently enrolled National University students who live in San Diego, are active-duty military or veterans, and who have demonstrated sustained educational success. Some of the programs represented by this year’s scholarship recipients include the Master’s program in Cyber Security and Information Assurance, and Accelerated Track for Vets to BSN (V2BSN) Project.
