The Meals on Wheels Gala “Mow Town” and 8th Annual Chef Appetizer Challenge was held on June 10 at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina to raise funds to support the independence and well-being of seniors in San Diego County. The event raised $250,000, which will help home-bound seniors. The annual Chef’s Celebrity Appetizer Challenge Award was won by Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, Del Mar. Union Bank was the major sponsor, and SDG&E and Sycuan (Corporate Honoree) were contributors.

The San Diego County Ronald McDonald House Charities/HACER Scholarship Program presented 10 high students of Hispanic descent with $2,000 each to pursue their higher education. The program recognizes high school seniors who demonstrate academic excellence, strong community involvement, personal success, and a desire to give back to their communities.

Sing Dance Crawl

On May 27, The Local Pacific Beach and PB Shore Club hosted its annual Sing Dance Crawl event, which included stops and entertainment at venues such as The Local, House of Blues, Parq, and Fluxx. Tito’s Vodka presented a $10,000 check to the Wingman Foundation and a total of $5,000 was raised. The mission of the foundation is to provide immediate post-mishap support for the Navy and Marine Corps Aviation community and their families.

San Diego Center for Children received a 3-year grant award for $220,000 from Price Philanthropies Foundation. The funds will support the Family Wellness Center’s services to meet the mental health needs of a child and their family – regardless of the severity of their mental health needs or insurance coverage. The grant includes funding for staffing to implement the center’s newly developed methodology to assess families’ needs in order to develop individualized Family Action Plans to complement the therapeutic services provided to their child.

San Diego Women’s Foundation

The San Diego Women’s Foundation’s Annual Grants Celebration was held at the USD Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice on June 1. Five organizations were selected to support programs that provide help for youth homelessness in San Diego County. A total of $200,000 was granted to Just in Time for Foster Youth, Promises2Kids, San Diego LGBT Community Center, Think Dignity, and Voices for Children. “We are delighted to award grants to five organizations that are doing critical, effective work to address youth homelessness in our region,” said Katie Sawyer, Executive Director of the San Diego Women’s Foundation.

Julian Hard Cider will host a Red, White and Blue campaign on the Fourth of July to honor those who have served. The local cidery will partner with Donut Bar to offer American-themed donuts with red, white, and blue ciders. Proceeds will benefit Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, an organization providing care to those grieving the loss of a loved one serving in the Armed Forces.

Life on Fire raised $35,246 for Feeding San Diego as part of their leadership training program. The organization created the Prosperity Legacy Project as a leadership training program for coaches and as a way to give back to the community.

On May 20 Second Chance held its annual Orange is the New Black benefit at Qualcomm Hall. The event raised $84,000 for the Youthful Offender Rehabilitation Program. The organization was also the first-ever recipient of an award from the Count of San Diego for their work with youth at the East Mesa and Kearny Mesa Juvenile Detention Facilities.

Wine Women & Shoes

Voices for Children held its 6th annual Wine Women & Shoes event on May 20 at the Canfield-Wright Estate in Del Mar. Some of this year’s fashion marketplace partners were Cedros Soles, Ted Baker, Kendra Scott, and Susie O’s Handbags. The event raised $250,000 to support VFC’s CASA program providing one-on-one advocacy to San Diego County foster youth. Event sponsors included California Bank & Trust, First American Title, L+L Printers, Mechanics Bank, and Wells Fargo.
