For next month’s review, we’ll be taking a look at Masala Street in La Jolla, the partnership between master Indian chef Hemant Oberoi and his son, Saransh. The pedigree is impeccable, and the food largely lives up to the advance herald. One of the biggest joys on the menu is a traditional Mumbai street food—spicy corn on the cob. It’s halved cobs, served popsicle style, with each kernel perfectly roasted and served with a spicy garam masala chutney of sorts and cilantro. If you’ve ever enoyed Mexican street corn, this is a must try.

The days are getting colder in San Diego. You’ve even broken out the light sweater, so help you god. And now is the perfect time to revisit Downtown’s top ramen shop. Their spicy sesame ramen is absolutely the call—with a pork-based tonkotsu broth that’s mixed with sesame paste, then loaded with noodles, spicy ground pork, chives, bean sprouts, pork or chicken cashu to your liking, a half ramen egg, and fried garlic. The fried garlic is the crispy rooftop for one of the better one-bowl meals in town.

Egg Tart @ 85°C

The egg tart is a thing to behold, and 85°C has one of the best in town. Even though it has European roots, the simple, not overly cloying dessert has become a staple in Asian bakeries. It’s simply plain egg custard, browned and caramelized, nestled into a puff pastry crust. Whereas many American chefs tend to throw a boatload of sugar at any dessert, Asian pastry chefs have a more judicious hand with the sweetener. The final result doesn’t miss a single granule.
