Cam and Wanda Garner made a gift of $2 million to establish the Garner Family Chancellor’s Endowed Chair in Blood and Marrow Transplant at Moores Cancer Center, UC San Diego Health. The generous donation will fund blood cancer and blood and marrow transplant research, as well as teaching and clinical care.
Edward D. Ball, MD, director and chief of the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program at UC San Diego Health, will be the inaugural chair holder.

Ted is an exceptional physician-scientist—caring and compassionate, bringing a singular spectrum and breadth of expertise to patient care. His paradigm-changing research has led to practice-changing advances, launching a new field of immune-checkpoint blockade in the transplant setting.”

During its inaugural Spotlight fundraising event at the University Club, The Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Foundation raised over $130,000 for arts education. The funds will support students in transitional kindergarten through 12th grade in the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD).
VAPA welcomed important guests such as SDUSD Superintendent Cindy Marten and Board of Education President Sharon Whitehurst-Payne. Local philanthropist Denny Sanford, Dr. & Mrs. Maurice Shahon, Phyllis Epstein, and City Councilmember Barbara Bry also attended.
On behalf of UC San Diego, Chancellor Pradeep Khosla presented a gift of $100,000, UCSD’s second gift of that amount, and encouraged others to match. VAPA raises money to invite professional artists into classrooms, allow students to take field trips to museums and theaters, and to train teachers.
The Mission Bay High School Gypsy Jazz Quartet and Mira Mesa High School’s Abie Songco performed.
Poway Unified School District honored its Teachers of the Year, Volunteers of the Year, and Classified Employees of the Year during the annual Employee Recognition Dinner at the Rancho Bernardo Inn.
Arey Jones received the Business Partner of the Year award for its continued support of PUSD. HP Inc. was recognized with the Student Impact award after HP employees participated in the “Hour of Code” classroom program this past December.
