Lori Walton was among those honored at the 42nd annual National Philanthropy Day luncheon held on Oct. 28 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel. Sharp Health Care was the Presenting Sponsor for the event which honored nine outstanding community leaders for their contributions to the community – as well as those people and organizations making a difference. Others recognized included Evelyn and Ernest Rady, Cymer, LLC and Barney & Barney Foundation. SDG&E Sempra was the Community Engagement Sponsor. Pam Becker, AFP San Diego Board President, Linda Katz, Chair Honorary Committee and Bill Littlejohn, Chair Planning Committee, were the leaders of the event.
YWCA of San Diego County raised $100,000 for the YWCA and Becky’s House domestic violence program at the 2014 Walk A Mile In Her Shoes event. Becky’s House domestic violence program offers a safe haven for victims to overcome trauma, improve their economic status and achieve self-sufficiency. The program encompasses a 24-hour domestic violence hotline, an emergency shelter and transitional housing communities along with supportive services.
Karen and Tom Mulvaney gifted the University of San Diego’s Center for Community Service Learning with $3 million. In honor of the gift, the Center will be renamed as the Karen and Tom Mulvaney Center for Community, Awareness and Social Action (CASA). Tom Mulvaney is a 1977 graduate of the USD School of Law. The couple’s son, earned his bachelor’s degree in 2009 from the University and Tom’s father, Jim, taught at the USD School of Law. The couple has a long history of community involvement and are committed to CASA’s mission to connect students, staff, faculty and alumni with their local and global communities.
Home Start, seventh annual Hallo-Wine Fall Festival raised $15,000 to support child abuse prevention. The event was held on Oct. 18 at a private estate in Marston Hills. Participating in the Hallo-Wine Fall Festival were San Diego hospitality and entertainment vendors who support Home Start programs.
The Seany Foundation’s 7th Annual Everything is Possible Celebration was held on Oct. 18 at the Del Mar Country Club. $175,000 was raised to support awareness for kids, teens and young adults affected by cancer and to fund the Free Summer Camp for Kids program. Members of the Foundation’s Founders’ Circle were honored with the Seany Community Service Award. Sponsors of the Celebration included University Compounding Pharmacy and Medical Center Pharmacies, Qualcomm, Wells Fargo, Barona Resort & Casino and Barney & Barney.

Wacky Walk – Center for Children
The San Diego Center for Children raised $225,000 at the Wacky Wonky Walk & Kids Festival held on Nov. 1. The Golden Ticket Sponsor was Phil’s B.B.Q, LANtelligence , PAR Electrical Contractors and CJ Drilling were the Chocolate Factory Sponsors. Others were SDG&E, Pro Traffic Services, Picket Fence Design and Takeda.
Union Bank and KPBS honored two local heroes in celebration of Disability Awareness Month. The 2014 Disability Awareness Month honorees are Alex Montoya, San Diego Padres and Travis Ricks, Challenged Athletes Foundation. They were recognized at a private dinner celebration with their families and executives from KPBS and Union Bank. They were recognized for making a difference and enriching the lives of others by improving their community.

Friends of Balboa Park held its Fourteenth Annual Awards Luncheon, San Diego on the EVE of GREATNESS on Oct. 21 at the Balboa Park Club. Millennium Award Honorees were Jerry Sanders & Rana Sampson for their commitment to the betterment of the park. Inspiration Awards were given to five volunteers who were nominated by their peers in the Balboa Park community.

Millennium Health donated 50 bicycles for children participating in the Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County program, and UPS helped deliver each bike to the children’s homes on Oct. 2. “Millennium Health is honored to help give these kids an opportunity to have fun while engaging an outdoor physical activity,” said Brock Hardaway, CEO, Millennium Health.
