The Shelter of HOPE (Helping Open People’s Eyes) campaign for American Red Cross San Diego raised $430,000 for local disaster relief. CEO Bill Earley began his stay in a simulated disaster shelter as it traveled throughout San Diego County. Earley spent 16 days in the mobile shipping container outfitted as a mock disaster shelter. $250,000 was raised from donations from the public and another $180,000 match was made possible by SDG&E and two other donors. A team of ARC volunteers supported the effort to raise the funds.

The 129th Anniversary Celebration of San Diego Center for Children was held on June 2 at the US Grant Hotel. “Blues Thursday” was presented by SDG&E. Platinum Sponsor was Sycuan Band of The Kumeyaay Nation, and Gold Sponsor was BB&T John Burnham Insurance. $360,000 was raised to benefit the children and families who are struggling with behavioral, emotional, and mental health challenges. Jim Avery and Susie Sides were presented the PATH Award – Partners in Achieving Transformation and Hope. They were recognized for the impact their giving has made in the lives of those served by the Center.
The 2016 Corporate Partner of the Year for Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County is LPL Financial, and the 2016 Community Partner of the Year is The Ken Blanchard Companies. The outstanding partners have made a significant impact in the lives of San Diego youth and in the promotion and support of the San Diego mentoring movement.
City Ballet of San Diego held its annual spring fundraiser, Take Flight with City Ballet, at the private hanger of Dr. Steven Byers at Montgomery Field on June 5 raising $45,000 for Education and Outreach programs including Discover a Dancer, Ballet Goes to School, and Summer Intensive.

The USO San Diego’s 75th Anniversary Stars and Stripes Gala: It Takes a City to Support our Military, was held on June 4 at the Hotel del Coronado. Papa Doug Manchester was named the recipient of the USO San Diego’s Patriots Award. The Manchesters were the Presenting Title Sponsors for the event. The event raised $750,000 to support San Diego service members. The USO Neil Ash Airport Center and the Downtown center offer services for traveling military members and their families.
The 15th annual Shoot to Cure HD was held on June 10, raising funds for the Huntington’s Disease Society. The event was held at Chargers Park and raised $70,000. Proceeds will help fund ongoing research and education toward finding a cure, and provide support services for those living with Huntington’s Disease. Cymer, San Diego, was the Presenting Sponsor. Restaurants serving food included Peohe’s, Brigantine Seafood Restaurants, Miguel’s Cocina, and Union Kitchen & Tap.
Meals on Wheels held its 7th Annual Chef Appetizer Challenge on June 11 at Sheraton Harbor Island Pavilion. Ragin’ Cajun Bayou Blowout raised $290,000 to help San Diego home-bound seniors. The winner of the Chef Appetizer Challenge and the “Chefy” Award was 14 year old Cookie Dutch. The funds are critical to support the independence and well-being of 3,400 seniors in San Diego County.

The San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy received a $10,000 grant from REI for the repair and improvement of segments of the Bernardo Heights Trail in the San Dieguito River Park. A $1,000 grant from Patagonia will support the Conservancy’s Citizen Science Monitoring Program at the recommendation of Adventure 16.
The Salsa Ride at the Border raised $60,000 for ophthalmology efforts at Hospital Infantil de las Californias. The event was sponsored by the Children of the Californias. The bi-national bike ride begins and ends at the San Diego Outlets at the Border in San Ysidro, and raises funds for the Hospital Infantil de las Californias, a pediatric medical specialty complex in Tijuana.

Chick-fil-A restaurants in San Diego County gave away 10,000 chicken sandwiches to active duty member of the military or retired veterans during its ninth annual Military Appreciation Night promotion on May 25.
