Opus 2013, the San Diego Symphony was held on Oct. 12 at Copley Symphony Hall and the University Club. The event raised $700,000 to support the education and outreach programs of the Symphony. Sponsors of the event included SDG&E, Sempra Energy, Delta KLM Air France, Torrey Pines Bank, U.S. Trust and Bank of America. Helene and George Gould were Gala Chairs. The Symphony Orchestra departed for New York City after the Gala for a performance at Carnegie Hall on Oct. 29 and then on to China for guest performances.

Rumble in the Ranch Poker Tournament and Silent Auction is scheduled for Nov. 16 at the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe. Proceeds will benefit the Rancho Santa Fe Senior Center.

In celebration of disability Awareness Month, Union Bank and KPBS has joined together to honor two inspirational individuals as local heroes. The 2013 Disability Awareness Month honorees are Linda Bounds, founder of L.E.A.P.S. (Lovingly Energetic Artistic Programs for Seniors) and BOUNDS; and Al Kovach, Jr., of Paralyzed Veterans of America. Both will be recognized with other heritage month honorees during a November celebration. “We are thrilled to partner with Union Bank as we honor these incredible individuals,” said Tom Karlo, KPBS general manager.  “Being able to introduce these local heroes and their contributions within our programming is an honor. Their stories are inspiring and their influence on our San Diego community is remarkable.”

Community HousingWorks partnered with the County of San Diego, private foundations and corporate sponsors to participate in a one-day makeover renovating a community garden in Escondido on Oct. 24. Community HousingWorks Avocado Court Garden was expanded to serve 100 families, up from 18 families. Donors to the community garden included the City of Escondido, LISC/Kendeda Fund, Home Depot, Escondido Charitable Foundation, Leichtag Foundation, Sun Country Builders and Schmidt Landscape.

Challenge Center Ed and Sandra Burr

The Challenge Center, a physical therapy rehabilitation center in La Mesa, raised $200,000 in donations at its 16th annual Comedy Night Gala featuring Vicki Lawrence. Proceeds will benefit the Challenge Center’s scholarship fund that subsidizes physical therapy expenses for low-income individuals.

United Through Reading is holding its 5th Annual Storybook Ball on Nov. 9 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine. Funds raised will support their work to offer military service members the opportunity to be video-recorded reading storybooks to their children at home from locations around the world. Jennifer Holm, award-winning children’s author and Executive Director of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, Liza McFadden will be a special guest at the event.

New Generator St. Paul’s Villa

St. Paul’s Villa on 4th Avenue in San Diego held a press conference on Oct. 24 to announce a new generator for St. Paul’s Senior Homes & Services that was funded by a $375,000 Community Development Block Grant. The generator will boost the electrical needs to be an in-take disaster shelter for vulnerable seniors in the time of a countywide disaster or emergency. The new emergency generator will better allow St. Paul’s to accommodate and serve residents and other vulnerable seniors in need of special services and care during the next disaster evacuation.

Natural High celebrated its 13th annual Natural High Gala on Oct. 19. Olympic Gold Medalist, Jordyn Wieber was honored at the event which raised $450,000 to continue Natural High’s mission to help youth discover, amplify and pursue their natural high instead of an artificial high. Signature sponsor was a State and Sponsor a Youth campaign.

Bike MS Bay to Bay Tour

Kid Ventures Eastlake hosted a special Memorial fundraiser event for the families of two United States Navy sailors on Oct. 19. $2,100 was raised and will be donated to the Landon Jones/Jon Gibson Memorial Fund established in honor of the two U.S. Navy sailors who were killed in a helicopter crash in the Red Sea in September.

The San Diego Ad Club held its inaugural Brand Diego Awards ceremony on Oct. 17 to highlight outstanding San Diego brands and the marketing professionals who help build those brands. The Club presented the Media Company of The Year award to KPBS.  Tom Karlo, General Manager of KPBS. Said, “This demonstrates KPBS’ long and respected history within the community. Also, our commitment to serving our audience with trusted news and terrific programming is paying off – with growing audiences and this recognition from a group of esteemed peers in the industry.”

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s San Diego-based Pacific South Coast Chapter held its 31st annual Bike MS Bay to Bay Tour on Oct. 19 and 20. Cyclists helped raise $1,824,353 for MS research and programs and services for people affected by MS, a chronic and disabling disease of the central nervous system. Sponsors included Hansen Beverage Co., KSWB-TV Fox 5 San Diego and KTLA-TV Channel 5 Los Angeles.
