The 50th Women of Dedication presented by The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary was held on April 7 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. Fifteen women were recognized for their support to the San Diego community. Honoree Dr. Elisabeth Jones was unable to attend and is not included in the photo. Proceeds raised at the event are designated for the Haven Program at the Door of Hope. Other funds raised bringing the total net to $200,000, go to the programs supported by the Auxiliary. Corporate Sponsors for the luncheon included San Diego Foundation, SDG&E/Sempra Energy, San Diego Chargers, Ahern Seeds, Sycuan Casino and Union Bank.

March of Dimes San Diego March for Babies 2015 walk in Balboa Park was held on Apr. 25. Sponsors included Jack in the Box at the Platinum level, Tri-City Medical Center at the Gold level, and UC San Diego Health System at the Silver level. National March for Babies sponsors included Cigna, Famous Footwear, -Mart, Macy’s, Mission Pharmacal and United Airlines. The $400,000 raised will support the mission of March of Dimes to end premature birth.

The Arc of San Diego’s 2015 Gala, The Jewels on Broadway, was held on Mar. 14 at the Grand Del Mar. Several San Diegans were honored for their philanthropic contributions and leadership in the community. The event raised $80,000 to help Arc serve children and adults with disabilities. Sponsors included US Bank and SDG&E. Jon Kurtin, Board Member of the Arc San Diego Foundation, presented a $1 million contribution from the Sol & Ruth Gerber Trust. The funds will support renovations at The Arc of San Diego’s Starlight Center in Chula Vista and also Our Place, Arc’s yoga and wellness center for people with disabilities.

The American Heart Association San Diego Heart Ball was held on May 2 at the Estancia La Jolla Hotel. Dr. John Lamberti was recognized with the 2015 Heart Ignite Award and Jerry Sanders received the 2015 Donald P. Shiley Innovation Award. Funds raised will support AHA’s research that allows us to better understand what causes heart disease and stroke, as well as ways to diagnose, treat and prevent them.
Girls Think Tank hosted its sixth annual gala, “Wild West Roundup For Rights” on Apr. 18 at the Central Library. The gala raised $25,000 for programs that advance basic human dignity in San Diego. GTT, a group of attorneys and professionals along with people living on the streets, raises funds for programs including the Transitional Storage Center. The gala participating chefs included Hanis Cavin from Carnitas’ Snack Shack, Jaime Chavez from Sirena Gourmet Latin Seafood Fernanda Peimbert from Berry Good Night.
United Way of San Diego County has launched its fourth annual Summer Reading Book Drive from May 1 – 31. The drive will provide bilingual summer reading for economically disadvantaged children up to age eight. The drive culminates on United Way’s annual Day of Action to be held on June 20 when children shop for books that match their interests. The book drive is sponsored by GEICO, Thermo Fisher, AT&T, San Diego Regional Airport Authority and the Women’s Leadership Council of United Way.

The SDSU Children’s Center’s 11th Annual “A Is For Art” Gala was held on Apr. 18 at Mingei International Museum. Each year at the SDSU Children’s Center, kids pair up with local artists and collaboratively create masterpieces to be auctioned off at a gala in April. Proceeds from the artwork auction were $10,000 and will be put toward enhancing the learning environment inside the classrooms, and the Children’s Center as a whole. This year, the Children’s Center would like to equip all teachers with iPads to track students’ development.
