The fourth president of University of San Diego, James T. Harris, D.Ed., was installed at a ceremony held at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on Dec. 4. The Installation Ceremony was the culmination of a weeklong schedule of activities. USD in CommUNITY organizers have planned to complete five major projects including building a garden shed, undergrounding the garden’s irrigation system, building a foot work bench complete with a roofing system designed to collect rain water, replacing a falling pergola, and rebuilding plant beds.
Petco Foundation is investing $1 million in San Diego Humane Society to help save more lives. The grant, to be funded over five years, will directly benefit the lifesaving programs offered by SDHS and will help maintain the “Getting to Zero,” initiative, which aims to save healthy and treatable pets throughout San Diego County. Dr. Gary Weitzman, president and CEO of San Diego Humane Society, said “We’ve made a commitment to provide a second chance to every healthy and treatable animal in San Diego County, and with continued support from the Petco Foundation, we’ll be able to continue to do just that.”

The 4th Annual Gold Shield Gala was held on Nov. 14 benefitting the San Diego Police Foundation. The $140,000 raised will be used to propel the Police Foundation’s mission of creating a safer San Diego with the replacement of five police dogs who will be retired in January. Major sponsors included Scripps Health, Wells Fargo, Walmart and SDG&E.

The 21st Annual Gala, Midnight in Paris, was held on Nov. 7 at the US Grant to benefit City Ballet of San Diego. The $100,000 will support the education and outreach programs of City Ballet. The City Ballet unveiled The Sally B. Thornton Scholarship with a gift of $3,000 from John Thornton. The program will assist worthy, aspiring dancers, giving them the opportunity to participate in City Ballet’s Summer Intensive.
The Rancho Bernardo Community Foundation, an affiliate of The San Diego Foundation, awarded $70,578 to 19 nonprofit organizations. The grants were awarded at the RBCF 26th Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon held on Nov. 24 at the Rancho Bernardo Inn. RBCF is dedicated to improving the quality of life and meeting emerging needs in Rancho Bernardo by increasing responsible and effective philanthropy. Included as 2015-2016 grantees are: $8,978 to Continuing Education Center; $7,500 to Turtleback Education Foundation; $5,200 to Bur Institute; $4,500 to ElderHelp of San Diego; and $5,000 to Youth Philharmonic Orchestra.

USO San Diego served Thanksgiving dinner to 1,800 military personnel. Meals were made possible by the support of GEICO, La Jolla Rotary Club, Chef DK Catering, Manchester Grand Hyatt, Hotel del Coronado, Julian Pie Company and Coco’s at Camp Pendleton.

Tri-City Hospital Foundation’s Baile de Esperanza was held on Nov. 7. The event focused on raising funds for the NICU and updating and growing its Women and Infant Services. The total amount raised was $400,000. Tri-City Medical Center was the Anniversary Sponsor and Tri-City Medical Center Medical Staff were Gold Sponsors. Other sponsors included BB&T Insurance Services, Elmcroft Senior Living, Greater Tri-Cities IPA Medical Group, San Diego Imaging and North County Oncology/Pacific Registry Services.
San Diego Habitat for Humanity partnered with Realty Income Corporation on Dec. 8 to build homes for families in need. A donation f $125,000 to SDHFH and 120 employee volunteers helped build the homes. Volunteers worked to roof, paint, landscape, install siding, permeable pavers and fencing at the final two homes of Habitat’s Foundation Lane Community in El Cajon. In addition to the $125,000 donation for building materials, Realty Income surprised six SDHFH partner families with gift cards to use to purchase home furnishings.
