Alison Balsom is not the stereotypical, Coke-bottle-glassed trumpeter from your high school marching band; she’s a total knockout, a bona fide star in Great Britain, and the composer of much of her own music. On April 6, she’ll appear with the Scottish Ensemble at the Museum of Contemporary Art SD, as part of the La Jolla Music Society’s 2013 series. It’s the second stop on her first major US tour. And Balsom is not the only one blowing her horn this month. The San Diego REP is producing the world premiere of The Federal Jazz Project, which showcases the music of local trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos (page 28). For tickets to see Balsom, visit ljms.org.
