Extreme Skiing
If you can’t make it to the slopes this month, travel vicariously with a local showing of Warren Miller’s Ticket to Ride, the 64th film in his annual series. Narrated by Olympic gold medalist Jonny Moseley, the film follows fellow gold winners Julia Mancuso, Ted Ligety, and Seth Wescott to far-flung destinations like Norway and Greenland. Screenings take place at La Paloma Theatre in Encinitas (November 29), Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego La Jolla (November 30), and Carlsbad Village Theatre (December 1). Last chance to see Elephant Parade in Dana Point! On their first stop in the U.S., via cities like London and Singapore, these works of art are just marching through. Planted throughout the city, 37 hand-painted elephants are raising awareness for the conservation of Asian elephants. Seventeen of these sculptures—four of them life-size—stand tall at the warrenmiller.com, which is offering an Elephant Parade Tribute Package through November 17. Vegas Goes Vintage
Sin City, capital of over-the-top glitz and artifice, is finally catching on to the rustic, vintage aesthetic. Downtown at the new Park on Fremont (506 East Fremont), sip craft cocktails in mason jars (are we sick of this trend yet?) or taste craft beer among found objects like a claw-foot tub and a Cinderella carriage. Sister restaurant Commonwealth (525 Fremont) features the now-ubiquitous exposed brick and speakeasy in back. Despite all this un-Vegas décor, though, the views of the city still steal the show.
