IN THE NEXT ISSUE:

A guide to global cuisine, and a tribute to our military.

As I write this, I am eight months pregnant. I’m grateful that it’s my second pregnancy, because it means I’m not as nervous, but at the same time I catch myself just going through the motions at biweekly doctor appointments and forgetting how wondrous it is that I’m growing a tiny human being. Reading our Top Docs editorial reminds me of the everyday miracles, brought to life not only by medical advances, but by the doctors, health advocates, and others helping those in need right here in San Diego. Here’s a quick “dose” of what you’ll get inside these pages.

8 Things I Learned in This Issue:

1. Rady Children’s Hospital cardiologists envision a day when we’ll be repairing hearts in the womb or even undoing potential heart problems using genetic treatments.

2. There are certified cancer exercise trainers customizing workouts for patients at Carlsbad’s Tri-City Wellness Center.

3. Naps are proven to be beneficial. They help make NASA astronauts 54 percent more alert.

4. UC San Diego’s Center for Community Health has a Refugee Health Unit with projects like implementing women-only swimming hours for Muslim women at Copley-Price Family YMCA in City Heights.

5. HPV can cause cancer, yet only about 50 percent of people get the HPV immunizations.

6. As provocative as it sounds, there’s a breast massage at The Chopra Center in Carlsbad, available to women who are healing after breast augmentation or cancer.

7. Physicians are reluctant to make time-based prognoses, yet the median length of time a patient receives hospice care is just 17 days.

8. Doctors truly are doctors in their off-time. At the photo shoot pictured above, our Top Doc was quick to provide water and sunscreen to all. This pregnant lady really appreciated it.

Stay healthy, stay active, and get to know the movers and shakers of our medical community.
