I grew up in Sweden and don’t get a chance to visit often, but this was my boyfriend’s first time, so we had a lot to check off his list. We visited the Vasa Museum to view a salvaged, almost fully intact 17th-century shipwreck, and went on a day trip to the Disney-looking Gripsholm Castle in Mariefred. One of 11 royal palaces in Sweden, it has a huge collection of portraits dating back to the 1500s.
Of course we ate tons of good food—most notably, a perfect chèvre chaud at Chutney on Katarina Bangata and the vegetarian buffet at Hermans, which has one of the best views in Stockholm.
For our favorite combination of craft beer and puppies, Brewdog on Ringvägen did not disappoint. A hot tip from the locals is grabbing rosé from the state-owned alcohol monopoly Systembolaget and sharing it in the park at Skinnarviksberget during sunset. Drinking in (certain) parks is legal in Sweden, and it’s a perfect way to spend those Northern summer nights when it barely gets dark.
