If Napa seems like a schlep, celebrate California Wine Month in Temecula

By Lauren Craig

Join Temecula winemakers and fellow vino enthusiasts at the fifth annual wine and culinary showcase, CRUSH, on September 13. Try varietals from more than 30 wineries and appetizing bites from local restaurants. The event takes place at the Wiens Family Cellars ($85, temeculawines.org).

On September 21, the Blessing of the Wine Grape Stomp & Harvest Festival is a family-friendly event with tractor rides through the vineyards, plus an all-you-can-eat buffet, music and dancing, and, of course, grape-stomping ($55, wineresort.com).

Plan to sip and stay? The three-time winner of Best California Winery of the Year, South Coast Winery Resort and Spa, offers 76 private villas with vineyard views of their 39 acres. Take an exclusive tour of the property and wind down in the Grapeseed Spa.

If one month of wine appreciation is not enough, come back and be the first to stay at South Coast’s newest expansion, Carter Estate Winery and Resort, uncorking this fall. Be sure to say hello and raise a glass to the Carter family, as this labor of love has been nine years in the making.

As part of California Wine Month, the Temecula Wine Growers Association offers a 30-day Sip Passport. Pay $40 and visit four participating wineries of your choice for a full tasting. temeculawines.org
